How to sell on WhatsApp: turn chats into a real sales channel

WhatsApp is where your customers already are. Learn to turn it into a serious sales channel: catalog, automatic orders, payments and 24/7 service.

In many markets — Latin America above all — the question “do you have WhatsApp?” comes before “do you have a website?”. Your customers already live in the chat: that’s where they ask for prices, request photos and close purchases. The problem is that most businesses run that channel by hand — and a manual channel doesn’t scale.

The hidden cost of manual WhatsApp

  • Slow replies kill sales. A customer who asks at 9 p.m. and gets an answer at 10 a.m. the next day probably already bought elsewhere.
  • The knowledge lives in one phone. If the person answering gets sick or quits, the customer history leaves with them.
  • There’s no data. How many conversations ended in a sale? Which products get asked about most? Nobody knows, because nothing is recorded.
  • Growing means hiring. More chats = more people answering the same questions, over and over.

What conversational commerce looks like (done right)

With the WhatsApp Business API, the chat stops being a shared phone and becomes sales infrastructure:

  1. Catalog inside the chat. The customer asks and instantly receives products, photos and prices — at any hour.
  2. Orders that register themselves. The conversation generates the order in your system with products, quantities and delivery details.
  3. Smart automatic replies. Frequent questions (prices, hours, shipping) get answered on the spot; complex cases escalate to a person with full context.
  4. Follow-up notifications. Confirmation, dispatch and delivery announce themselves — the channel where the customer buys is the same one where they get updates.
  5. Real metrics. Conversations, conversion, most-requested products: data to decide with, not gut feeling.

How we build it at Nexodo

Our WhatsApp Commerce project does exactly this: it automates catalog, orders and notifications on top of the official WhatsApp Business API. And as part of NexoShop, the chat connects with inventory, accounting and shipping, so the WhatsApp order lives in the same system as the rest of your operation.

The automation layer relies on tools like n8n for the flows and AI models like Claude to understand natural language — with clear guardrails: the AI answers what it knows and hands off to a human when it should.

Common mistakes when automating WhatsApp

  • Bots that trap people. Nothing frustrates more than a 7-option menu with no human exit. Automation must resolve fast or escalate fast.
  • Using unofficial numbers. “Pirate” solutions built on personal WhatsApp get blocked without warning and leave you channel-less overnight. The official API exists for a reason.
  • Automating without connecting. A bot that takes orders but doesn’t register them in your inventory just moves the manual work somewhere else.
